THE STRUCTURE OF GOODNESS

A theory of goodness can be roughly divided into two components. One is about what ultimate values there are in the world. It is concerned with such questions as: Does nature have a value in its own right? What is good for people? For instance, does a person’s good consist in getting her preferences satisfied, as economists often assume? Or is it just good experiences that are valuable? Is happiness ultimately the only value? And so on.

The other component of a theory of goodness is concerned with aggregation. It is about how the different values there are in the world—whatever they might be—come together to make up the goodness of the world as a whole. Among its questions are: Is it better for well-being to be distributed equally among people rather than unequally? Does the date when a particular good occurs make a difference to its contribution to the goodness of the world? For instance, is it better for a good to occur earlier in time rather than later?
